Summit International supports Southend-on-Sea beach clean and #StopThePlasticTide appeal

Posted on Jun 26th, 2018

Summit International, a leading UK manufacturer and distributor of multiple outdoor living and leisure brands, supported its local community and the Marine Conservation Society (MSC) at the Southend-on-Sea beach clean, which took place on 17th June.

Results are just in following the analysis of the clean-up haul and the incredible clean team managed to remove over 30kg of harmful rubbish in only a 100m stretch of the popular coastline.    Among the offending items collected by the team were over 1400 pieces of plastics and non-recyclable items.

Summit supported the event through the donation of their eco-friendly MyBento Pure glass bottles to all of the volunteers taking part in the initiative, including the Ashwell Girl Guides, Essex. For each MyBento Pure glass bottle sold in the UK, Summit International will donate 50p (or £1 directly for the premium bottle) to MCS in support of their #StopThePlasticTide appeal, which aims to reduce plastic litter choking, starving and poisoning marine life.

The Marine Conversation Society (MCS) is the UK’s leading charity for the protection of the seas, shores and wildlife. MCS has over 900 passionate organisers all around the UK who take time out to coordinate beach clean events throughout the UK and help to protect and care for the coastline and the life that lives beneath it.

“We are overjoyed with the results from the beach clean, with Southend-on-Sea being our local beach, we are keen to preserve it for future generations. We hope that by gifting the MyBento bottles to the volunteers it will encourage them and others to reduce the use of single use plastics, which will in turn help to reduce plastic pollution. We are proud supporters of the Marine Conservation Society and will continue to work with them to raise awareness of the anti-plastics campaign,” said Richard Taylor, Sales Director at Summit International.

With plastic pollution being such a topical subject, the company’s MyBento bottles provide a great alternative to single use plastic bottles.  The eco-friendly MyBento bottles are made from BPA free tritan plastic and borosilicate glass, therefore do not contain the toxic chemicals found in common plastics.   The travel friendly, refillable bottles are available to purchase from SportsPursuit.

According to the Marine Conservation Society more than 95% of people have reported seeing litter when they have visited their local beach. Last year a study showed that the equivalent of one truck load of plastic is dumped into the sea every minute, if this doesn’t change by 2050 we could have more plastic then fish in the sea.
